BITTER WALK WIND SING

A Performative Procession

DE LANGSTE DAG / OOSTENDE / KAAP & MUZEE

Saturday 29 June / 18h

This year I have been working on a new iteration of a processional work that was previously performed in the park of the Middelheim Museum. This iteration comes to Oostende (as part of De Langste Dag) and will head down the breakwater that stretches out into the North Sea. Bitter Walk Wind Sing honours bitter plants with ancient histories as anti-fertility medicines. It is a procession and ambulatory library, comprising of embroidered banners, costumes and recuperated processional materials. At the heart of the procession is a ritual in which singer Mariske Broeckmeyer will perform a bittersong into the wind at the end of the strekdam.

We need you to join us in making this work complete! We are calling on friends, acquaintances and residents of Oostende to be active participants in the procession. What will you be doing? We need you to make up the body of the procession by carrying (singly or in pairs) the 21 embroidered banners. You are not going to be asked to perform. At 18h30 the procession will make its way from the promenade to the end of the breakwater, where the BitterSong will be performed, and from there will return to the promenade. Then, in a more informal way, we will head to KAAP where a formation of banners will be made on the beach.

Estimated time from the start of the procession until the formation on the beach at KAAP is 90min. It is important that participants feel able to manage this distance carrying a banner. Users of mobility aids such as wheelchairs are welcome to join.

If you would like to participate, or to express interest in participating, please contact me, Wendy Morris at bullybeef07@gmail.com or wendy.morris@kuleuven.be. More details will follow once we have that expression of interest.

We are looking looking forward to having you as a part of this work!

Wendy Morris and the teams from MuZee and KAAP
